That’s right kids it’s time for my review The Dark Knight, I’m also gonna review Hellboy II but that’ll be another post. I was gonna do them together but honestly Batman deserves his own post.
The Dark Knight: Where do I start? This isn’t your parents Batman folks, this Batman is darker, grittier and more realistic than any Batman that’s come before. I remember going to see Batman Begins with my Dad and just walking out awestruck at how well it was done, this one carries on the tradition. This is how Batman should be done! I know a lot of people are talking about Heath Ledger’s rendition of the Joker and honestly they should, he was amazing. Again it’s not like the Joker you’ve seen before, he’s not as over the top as Nicholson was nor as comical as Cesar Romero was on the television show. The best way I can think to describe his performance is a cross between the Mark Hamill animated version and Nicholson and even that’s not really accurate. He truly took this character and made it his own, and unlike the Tim Burton Joker this Joker doesn’t have a definite background story. He’s violent and psychotic but oh so much fun to watch. But the Joker is not the only villain in our hero’s path, there’s Two Face as well. Do yourself a favor and forget the Tommy Lee Jones version of Two Face, this version is so much more accurate! I’m not gonna divulge any spoilers but the transformation of Harvey Dent to Two Face was pretty well done (in my opinion). I know a lot of people are gonna have issues with it but if you keep in mind the source material and don’t take things as fact I think you’ll agree with me. The biggest advantage this incarnation of Batman has going for it over the previous movies is that it’s filmed on location in Chicago rather than on a studio back lot. It’s not neon colors splashed across the screen or hugely medieval architecture that could only exist in an artist’s imagination.
The cast is outstanding, Michael Caine is, as always, amazing on screen and the chemistry between him and Christian Bale is top notch. Speaking of Bale his performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne is even better than it was in Begins. I know I’m raving like a love struck fanboy right now but this movie really is that good. To wrap things up I will say that Aaron Ekhardt was the perfect choice as Harvey/Two Face and that if your a fan at all of Batman or liked Batman Begins go see this movie, you will not be disappointed. Final grade: Five stars outta Five
