I was aware of Hellboy before the movies (thanks to a job at a comics store) but had honestly never read any of his stuff, it just didn’t seem like my style of comic. I admit it, I was a Marvel zombie, content to read X-Men, Spider-man and a slew of others rather than branch out into other stuff. I’m not as narrow minded now but I’m sorry to say I’ve yet to read any Hellboy comics. That doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy the movies though, on the contrary the movies give you enough background for the character that you can watch the sequel without having seen the first! Granted there are some references to the first one that you wouldn’t catch without seeing the first but nothing important to the story.
So what’s the plot of Hellboy II you ask? I think I can fill you in without spoiling too much of the story. Long ago man, elves, ogres, trolls and goblins all lived together under the World Tree but man being greedy wanted more and declared war on the other races, almost wiping them out. The elves create an army to defend themselves against man, thus the Golden Army. Peace is established and the army is locked away until the Elf king’s son decides he wants to declare war on humanity. I can’t really say much more without giving away crucial details but Ron Perlman has found his niche as Hellboy. The visual effects are amazing and Guillermo Del Toro does an excellent job of mixing action, comedy and even romance into a very enjoyable movie. Like I said in my Dark Knight review, if your a fan of the first one do yourself a favor and go see this one, you won’t be disappointed.
