I know what your thinking “Geez is this guy gonna write about anything other than movies?” I will soon but I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately and that’s what your gonna get so there! I know there are a lot of blogs/sites that have their list of “must see movies” and I really try to be different than they are but this is one of the times I have to foist myself off on you. I’ll try not to do it in the future (much) but I can’t make any promises. So with that said on to the list.
#1) Yojimbo/Sanjuro: Ok I know that these are two separate movies but the main character is the same in both movies and they’re just great flicks. I’m not gonna give away any key details but if you’ve seen “A Fistful of Dollars” or “Last Man Standing” you’ve seen Yojimbo. Stranger comes into town in the middle of a feud between two families, they both want to recruit him, things happen after that. Akira Kurosawa truly was a cinematic genius, who else has had their work remade into different variations of the same story and inspired THE movie trilogy (Star Wars, not LOTR. Yes I know SW is now a sextet but for the purpose of this article there are only three movies, the prequels never happened). Not only was Yojimbo remade but so was the also awesome Seven Samurai (Magnificent Seven, Battle Beyond the Stars and even into anime Samurai 7) and The Hidden Fortress was the inspiration for Star Wars (C3P0 and R2D2 were based on the 2 thieves in the story according to Lucas). If you can handle a movie with sub-titles definitely check these two out. If you can’t handle sub-titles, then your gonna hate the rest of this list because there are a few other foreign films coming up.
#2) 13 Tzameti: A French film (yes it’s good even if it is French, don’t roll your eyes at me!) that’s really intense. Sebastien is a young man who has to support the rest of his family by doing odd jobs around town. When he takes the place of another man at an invitation only event things get…..well like I said I’m not gonna give away key details but this one is really, really intense and worth watching.
#3) The King of Kong (A Fistful of Quarters): This one combines two of my fav’s, movies and video games. It’s about one man’s attempt to break the world record high score for Donkey Kong and another man’s desperate attempt to hold onto that same record. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Billy Mitchell but after this you’re gonna want to punch him in the face as much as I did. You’ll see what I mean after you watch it.
#4) Night Watch: A Russian film this time, this one actually out-grossed LOTR AND Spider-man at the box office. It’s about warring factions of well I don’t really want to say monsters, let’s call them Others. The Night Watch polices the evil Others and the Day Watch polices the good Others. This one was so original and well done that I actually attempted (unsuccessfully) to go to a screening of it before it opened but that’s another story. Watch this movie and Day Watch back to back and you won’t be disappointed.
#5) Fido: This movie is as the young folks say “the win”. In this movie the zombie outbreak has occurred but instead of overrunning humanity, scientists find a way to control them. Little Timmy’s family gets a zombie to keep up with the neighbors and become friends. I’m a huge mark for zombie movies anyway but this one combines humor and gore almost as well as it was done in Shaun of the Dead.
There are a lot of other movies that I wanted to mention but I think these five suffice for now and it’ll give me something else to write about later on. If you watch or have seen these movies I’d love to hear your thoughts on them, whether you agree or disagree.
Thanks for reading,
